Former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop recounts a “chilling conversation” he had with Bill Clinton as they discussed health care, sin taxes, and the power of the tobacco and liquor industries. The talk took place one late afternoon in 1993, after Koop had spent the day in the Old Executive Office Building, adjacent to the White House, reading the draft of the health care reform bill about to be proposed to Congress.

 
Larry Flynt, the publisher of Hustler magazine, recalls the effect of the ad he took out on October 4, 1998, in the Washington Post as the House of Representatives was moving toward impeachment. Seeking information on the sexual misdeeds of members of Congress, the ad snared a number of officials, most prominent among them Rep. Bob Livingston (R-LA). Set to succeed Newt Gingrich as speaker of the House after Gingrich stepped down due to the GOP’s poor showing in the November midterms, Livingston resigned in December when his marital infidelities became public.
